Briefs: Free car-seat checks; BJWSA open house; TCL commencement; Kiwanis Rib Burnoff

EMS to offer free car-seat inspection

Beaufort County EMS will hold a free child car-seat inspection from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Beaufort Town Center on Boundary Street.

EMS technicians will check car seats for defects and recalls and tell parents whether children are properly secured. Parents will not be ticketed or penalized during the event if corrections are required.

BJWSA to hold appreciation open houses

Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority customers are invited to visit the water utility's administrative building at 6 Snake Road in Okatie for light refreshments from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily this week.

The annual customer-appreciation event is in conjunction with National Drinking Water Week. Staff members will be on hand to answer questions about BJWSA.

Gen. Brown to speak at TCL commencement

Gen. Arthur Brown Jr. of Hilton Head Island, a retired four-star general and chairman of the Technical College of the Lowcountry's commission, will deliver the college's commencement address this year.

Commencement will be at 6 p.m. May 13 at the All-Weather Training Facility on Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. The college will honor 387 gradates receiving degrees, diplomas and certificates in arts and sciences, business technologies, health sciences and industrial technologies.

Kiwanis Club plans 15th Rib Burnoff

The Kiwanis Club of Hilton Head Island will hold its 15th annual Rib Burnoff and Barbecue Fest on May 14 at the Coastal Discovery Museum.

The event includes music by the Groovetones and a barbecue contest determined by two certified South Carolina barbecue judges. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the event, which starts at 4 p.m. Tickets will include seven samples of barbecue or ribs.

Advance tickets can be bought at Burke's Pharmacy on Main Street, Hilton Head; the Coastal Discovery Museum; Reilley's Bar & Grill on the south end of Hilton Head; User Friendly, 29F Hunter Road, Hilton Head; Bluffton Pharmacy, 167B Bluffton Road, Bluffton; Honey Baked Ham Co. in Bluffton; and from any Kiwanis member.
