Sun City to participate in earthquake drill

Sun City Hilton Head residents will take part in the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut at 10:15 a.m. Thursday to raise awareness of earthquake preparedness and to practice safety responses.

After an automated phone call alerts them to the drill, residents and employees will practice the "drop, cover and hold on" technique for at least one minute.

The ShakeOut drill began in California three years ago. This is the first year that 2.9 million people across 11 states are expected to participate.

Donate food at your mailbox May 14

The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its annual food drive May 14, when nonperishable food items will be collected from residents' mailboxes.

The food will be delivered by postal workers to local food pantries, such as Second Helpings and The Deep Well Project.

The "Stamp Out Hunger" drive is the largest one-day food drive in the nation.

Repairs to close lanes on William Hilton Parkway

Lanes of William Hilton Parkway on Hilton Head Island are scheduled to be closed for guard rail repairs starting Monday.

East and west lanes near Singleton Beach Road will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Barricades, flashing signs and flashing arrows will alert drivers.

15th Rib Burnoff planned for next month

The Kiwanis Club of Hilton Head Island will hold its 15th annual Rib Burnoff and Barbecue Fest on May 14 at the Coastal Discovery Museum.

The event includes music by The Groovetones and a barbecue contest overseen by two certified South Carolina barbecue judges.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the event, which starts at 4 p.m. Tickets will include seven samples of either barbecue or ribs.

Advance tickets can be bought at Burke's Pharmacy on Main Street, Hilton Head; the Coastal Discover Museum; Reilley's Bar & Grill on the south end of Hilton Head; User Friendly, 29F Hunter Road, Hilton Head; Bluffton Pharmacy, 167B Bluffton Road, Bluffton; Honey Baked Ham Co. in Bluffton; and from any Kiwanis member.
