Burton man dies after truck enters Battery Creek

An 83-year-old Burton man died Monday after his truck entered Battery Creek near the base of the Russell Bell Bridge.

Frank Fullwood had been fishing and was attempting to haul his boat out of the water at about 5 p.m. at the Parris Island Landing off S.C. 802, according to Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.

As he was backing the truck and trailer toward the water, he lost control of his vehicle and it entered Battery Creek, Allen said. He got out of his truck, but didn't make it to shore.

The Burton Fire Department responded to a report of a truck in the water near Marina Boulevard, spokesman Dan Byrne said. Initial reports said the man was swimming to shore.

But when firefighters arrived, he was unconscious and still in the water, Byrne said.

Firefighters and a resident with a boat brought him to shore, where CPR was administered by emergency personnel. He was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Allen said.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office dive team and a Coast Guard helicopter also responded, Byrne said.

Allen said the truck, trailer and boat were recovered.
