Winifred T. Murray, a retired Beaufort County teacher and wife of Port Royal Mayor Sam Murray, died Sunday at Beaufort Memorial Hospital from complications related to congestive heart failure, according to her husband.
She was 77. Originally from Greenwood, she moved to the area in 1955 and began a 30-year teaching career, Sam Murray said. The Murrays married in 1965, and she retired from Mossy Oaks Elementary School in 1985.
Until just days before her death, she was active with Union Baptist Church in Port Royal, Murray said.
"She was always doing for the church," he said. "She's always been a loving, caring person, always giving to everyone."
Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Home for Funerals is handling arrangements.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Old Fort Baptist Church. During the ceremony, the Eastern Star and Delta Sigma Theta will perform farewell rituals, according to the funeral home's website.
The funeral is at noon Thursday at Old Fort Baptist Church, with burial in Beaufort Memorial Gardens.
