The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette combined to win 46 awards, including six in which they competed against daily newspapers of all circulation divisions, in the S.C. Press Association's annual contest.
Winners were announced Saturday during an awards dinner in Columbia.
A single staff produces both the Packet and Gazette, and the 46 awards were the most of any other newsroom in the 20,000-and-under circulation category. Of those,31 came under the banner of The Island Packet, which finished second in the general excellence category. The Gazette won 15 awards and was third in general excellence.
The Packet won three awards in all-daily categories, competing against all other daily newspapers in South Carolina, and one in the open division, competing against all daily and weekly publications. No newspaper in its circulation category won more awards in those contests.
The Gazette won two all-daily competitions.
Editor Jeff Kidd, representing the Gazette, won the E.A. Ramsaur Award for Editorial Writing, an all-daily division contest. Graphics editor Drew Martin took second place for his informational graphics portfolio, an open-division contest, representing the Packet.
The Guide, distributed to both Packet and Gazette readers and produced by Liz Farrell, took first place in the all-daily entertainment section competition. Kate Cerve, representing the Gazette, won second place in the all-daily education reporting contest. The sports department took third place in the all-daily sports special section competition for its annual Verizon Heritage section.
The staff also won two awards in the public-service competition -- the Packet's coverage of a proposal to give tax incentives for a retail center that would be built in Okatie was second, and the Gazette took third for its coverage of investigations and audits of the Beaufort County Treasurer's Office.
Sports editor Justin Jarrett claimed two first-place prizes -- one for spot sports story and another for sports enterprise reporting. He shared the latter with sports writer Sam McDowell.
