S.C. Forestry Commission law enforcement officers will police outdoor burning, according to a new directive of aggressive enforcement that begins this month.
Data indicates that most wildfires in South Carolina are preventable, according to a news release from the Bluffton Township Fire District. Almost half begin as poorly timed or reckless debris burns that spread.
In February, the Forestry Commission responded to 790 wildfires that burned more than 5,100 acres -- almost double the five-year average for the month, the release said.
The Town of Bluffton Burning Ordinance is available on the town of Bluffton website and the Bluffton Township Fire District website. The Bluffton Township Fire District urges people to follow the regulation and practice safe burning.
Violators are subject to the penalties of a misdemeanor, according to the ordinance.
