A Lady's Island man died early Saturday after his car left the road and slammed into a utility pole after a Beaufort County Sheriff's deputy attempted to pull him over for speeding on Sams Point Road on Lady's Island, according to a release from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Jarvis Broin Wright, 29, died of internal injuries at the scene following the 2:30 a.m. crash, Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen said Saturday.

The crash occurred after a deputy with the Sheriff's Office Traffic Team attempted to stop Wright's vehicle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, the press release said.

The vehicle was found off the left side of the road near Thomas Sumter Street. It had struck the utility pole, the release said.

Capt. Allen Horton said Saturday the Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation of the events leading up to the fatal accident.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol's Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the accident from the time of crash, L/Cpl. Bob Beres said Saturday.

The Highway Patrol report could take weeks because it reconstructs the collision and maps the area before releasing a detailed account, Beres said.

Horton said Saturday the Sheriff's Office won't release additional information on the crash or the circumstances surrounding it until the M.A.I.T. report is complete.

"They're very early in their investigation, and the two investigations will connect," Horton said.
