New Democratic women's group forms

The newly formed Democratic Women of Beaufort will meet Feb. 15 at Gilligan's Seafood Restaurant, 2601 Boundary St.

An optional dinner will be at 6 p.m., and the meeting will start at 7 p.m. Any woman interested in promoting Democratic Party ideals through philanthropic and educational projects is welcome, according to a news release from the group.

Red Cross offering volunteer orientation

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is offering orientation for people interested in volunteering.

The sessions will be Thursday and Feb. 22 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. To enroll, call 843-757-7437.

One lane of John Smith Road to close

Work to patch John Smith Road between U.S. 278 and U.S. 17 will begin Tuesday. The road will be closed to one lane through February, according to a news release from APAC.

AARP offers free tax help

The AARP Tax-Aide Program will help prepare tax returns for low- and moderate-income taxpayers, with special attention to those 60 and older.

The program offers electronic filing through April 14. For help, go to:

  • Hilton Head Island library, 11 Beach City Road, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, except Tuesday.
  • SHARE Center for Active Adults, 6 Office Way, Suite 915, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays.
  • Bluffton library, 120 Palmetto Way, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Thursdays.

    Bring last year's tax return, W-2 Forms, all 1099 Forms, unemployment compensation form, Social Security SSA-1099 form and 1098 Forms. Also bring any information concerning real estate and personal property taxes, medical expenses and insurance, charitable contributions, estimated tax payments, and a copy of your Social Security card or other official document.

    Heritage seeks volunteers

    The Heritage golf tournament, Hilton Head Island's annual PGA Tour event, seeks volunteers for the 2011 tournament April 18-24 at Harbour Town Golf Links. Several committees have openings. No experience is necessary.
