A 50-year-old homeless man was arrested Tuesday on a charge of attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a man in the throat with a broken beer bottle on Hilton Head Island, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.

James Obie Jr. was arrested just after 11 p.m. after he was found sleeping on the deck of a vacant building on Target Road, the release said.

In addition to trespassing and attempted murder, Obie faces two counts of third-degree assault in connection with the incident early Tuesday outside apartments on the island's south end. During an argument at the Cordillo Court apartment of Chad Petersen, 28, Obie broke a beer bottle and slashed Petersen's throat, the release said.

When two of Petersen's friends tried to help the injured man, they were punched in the face several times by Obie before he ran away, according to the release.

Petersen remains in critical condition at a Savannah hospital, and his friends suffered minor injuries.

Obie is awaiting a bond hearing at the Beaufort County Detention Center. He has been arrested 18 times in Beaufort County since 1991, mostly on minor, nonviolent charges, according to the county jail log.
