A 50-year-old homeless man is wanted on charges of attempted murder after he stabbed a man in the throat with a broken beer bottle outside a Hilton Head Island apartment complex, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.

James Obie Jr., known to frequent both Hilton Head and Sheldon, also is wanted on two counts of third-degree assault and battery in connection with the incident Tuesday on the island's south end, according to the release.

When deputies arrived at the Cordillo Court parking lot at about 3:30 a.m., they found a 28-year-old man bleeding heavily from his neck. He was taken to Hilton Head Hospital and later to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he remains in critical but stable condition, the release said.

The man and two friends were at his apartment when Obie, who had been staying there, complained they were making too much noise, according to the release.

When the three walked out of the apartment, Obie followed. They began to argue, and Obie grabbed a broken beer bottle and slashed the man's throat, the release said.

When his friends tried to help the victim, Obie punched them in the face and ran.

The man's friends were not seriously injured, the release said.

Obie is described as black, about 6 feet tall and 160 pounds.
