Democratic Club to discuss health care reform

The Democratic Club of Beaufort County South of the Broad will discuss health care reform at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Hilton Head Island library on Beach City Road.

Patrick Cobb of the S.C. AARP and Frank Knapp of the S.C. Small Business Chamber of Commerce will discuss the Affordable Care Act. Topics will include benefits to individuals and businesses, as well as repeal efforts and hurdles to implementation in South Carolina.

Forum to focus on 'state of education'

The Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce Visitor and Convention Bureau will hold "The State of Education" forum from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1500 Queen St., Beaufort. Breakfast will begin at 8 a.m.

Program speakers will be Valerie Truesdale, superintendent of the Beaufort County School District; Tom Leitzel, president of the Technical College of the Lowcountry; and Jane Upshaw, chancellor of the University of South Carolina Beaufort. They will discuss their organizations' recent successes and their goals for the next decade.

AARP to offer free tax help

The AARP Tax-Aide Program will help prepare tax returns for low- and moderate-income taxpayers, with special attention to those age 60 and older.

The program offers electronic filing beginning the first week of February through April 14. For help, go to:

  • Hilton Head Island library, 11 Beach City Road, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, except Feb. 8.
  • SHARE Center for Active Adults, 6 Office Way, Suite 915, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursdays.
