Golf Notes: Sampson reaped rewards in 2010

Local golf professional Bill Sampson might not have been as eager to say goodbye to 2010 as most folks.

Sampson, the director of golf at Spring Island's Old Tabby Links, ended the year by receiving three awards in December, earning Golf Professional of the Year honors from the Hilton Head Island Chapter of the Carolinas PGA and Certified Instructor of the Week honors from the Titleist Performance Institute in addition to the 2010 Carolinas PGA President's Plaque he was awarded earlier in the month.

Sampson puts an emphasis on prolonging members' golf career through fitness and clinics, and he puts himself through the same programs. He created a golf fitness class for members and has lost 40 pounds through participating in the program.

In addition to naming Sampson as its Professional of the Year, the Hilton Head Island Chapter also honored Colleton River Plantation's Brett Heisler (Assistant Professional of the Year), Berkeley Hall's David Rogers (Player of the Year) and Berkeley Hall's Krista Dunton (Teacher of the Year).

Bluffton golfer Wesley Long will play in the Carolinas-Georgia Junior Championship at Mount Vintage Plantation in North Augusta on Monday and Tuesday.

The top 20 junior players in South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia are invited to the championship, which is expected to attract numerous college coaches.
