Woman faces felony charge in crash that killed Beaufort man

A Mississippi woman faces a felony charge of DUI involving a death in connection with the New Year's Day head-on collision that killed Kelvin Cherry of Beaufort.

Cherry, 46, was traveling east on Broad River Boulevard in Burton about 12:20 a.m. when an oncoming Ford F-150 pickup driven by Obdulia Carrasco-Cruiz, 37, of Biloxi crossed the center line and hit Cherry's Ford Ranger. It took Burton Fire District firefighters about 20 minutes to extract Cherry from his truck. He later died of chest trauma, according to Coroner Ed Allen.

Cruiz also is charged with operation of an uninsured vehicle and no driver's license, according to a news release Tuesday from the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Cruiz was released from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and is being held at the Charleston County Detention Center until she can be taken to the Beaufort County jail, according to the release.
