The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette have named Justin Jarrett as the papers' sports editor.
Jarrett has worked in the Packet's sports department since July 2005, starting as a reporter covering the Bluffton High School and Hilton Head Christian Academy beats. Upon the Packet's merger with the Gazette, Jarrett became the first USC Beaufort beat writer for both papers, and in September 2008, he was promoted to asssistant sports editor/online. In that newly created position, he helped oversee the sports section of the papers' websites and increased the sports department's social media presence through Facebook and Twitter.
In his time with the Packet and Gazette, Jarrett has won nine writing awards from the S.C. Press Association and five writing awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors, including first place for project reporting and third place for features in the 2008 contest.
Before moving to the Lowcountry, Jarrett spent more than a year as the sports editor of the Parsons (Kan.) Sun, where he won Kansas Press Association awards for columns and feature writing.
