Armed robbery attempted near school

A 62-year-old Hilton Head Island man was approached Wednesday night in the parking lot of Hilton Head Christian Academy by an armed man demanding money, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

The victim was walking to the school's gym at about 7 p.m. when a man appeared from the side of the building, pointed a black handgun and said "give me the money," according to the report.

The victim told the robber his money was in his car, then swung his gym bag at the man, who ran away toward Gardner Drive and William Hilton Parkway, the report said.

The victim told deputies he did not get a clear look at the robber's face, but described him as black, 30 to 35 years old, about 6 feet tall, wearing a dark-colored, hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and white sneakers, according to the report.

A teacher who was leaving the school told deputies he saw portions of the incident and did not recognize the suspect.
