A 46-year-old Beaufort man was killed early Saturday in a head-on collision in Burton.
Kelvin Cherry was traveling east on Broad River Boulevard at about 12:20 a.m. when a westbound Ford F-150 driven by a 37-year-old Obdulia Cruz of Biloxi, Miss., crossed the center line and struck Cherry's Ford Ranger head-on, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Cherry was trapped inside the truck for about 20 minutes and had to be cut free by firefighters from the Burton Fire District, said district spokesman Dan Byrne.
Cherry and Cruz were taken by Beaufort County EMS to Beaufort Memorial Hospital where Cherry was later pronounced dead of chest trauma, said Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.
Cruz sustained "potentially serious injuries," Byrne said.
Allen said an autopsy on Cherry's body will not be performed but the Coroner's Office is awaiting toxicology results to help determine whether alcohol played a role in the crash.
It is unknown whether Cruz will face charges related to Cherry's death.
The highway patrol still is investigating the crash, said Cpl. Paul Brouthers, department spokesman.
