Blood Alliance teams up with Piggly Wiggly

The Blood Alliance, in partnership with Piggly Wiggly grocery stores in Savannah and on Hilton Head Island, randomly drew two blood donors to participate in shopping sprees today.

Hilton Head resident Christine Grefe will have three minutes to grab as many groceries as she can at the Piggly Wiggly at Coligny Plaza, 17 Lagoon Road. The grocery grab starts at 1 p.m. Contestants are limited to one of each item. Alcohol, tobacco and gift cards are excluded.

This is the first year The Blood Alliance has done the grocery grab on Hilton Head to promote giving blood during the holidays, when donations are low and demand high because of more accidents, said John Helgren, Blood Alliance special events manager.

The Blood Alliance provides blood and blood products to more than 20 hospitals and medical facilities including in South Carolina.

To donate blood, schedule an appointment at, use the new smart iPhone/iPad iDon8 app or call 888-998-2243.
