The fifth annual Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Golf Tournament at the Legends of Parris Island Golf Club on Oct. 25 raised about $80,000, according to organizers.
The event had 132 participants, event suppliers and scholarship sponsors. Since its inception, the Parris Island event has raised $750,000 for the foundation's scholarship fund, according to a news release.
For nearly 50 years the private, nonprofit Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has provided scholarships for post-high school education to sons and daughters of Marines, with particular attention given to children whose parent has been killed or wounded in action.
For the 2010-11 school year, the foundation distributed $4.25 million for 1,400 scholarships nationally, including 49 to South Carolina students.
