An employee with Cleland Site Prep was injured Monday afternoon when a large pine tree fell on the cab of the excavator he was operating, according to the Bluffton Township Fire District.

The man was working to clear land on Lancaster Boulevard in Berkeley Hall at about noon when the pine fell on top of the vehicle's cab and trapped him inside, said Battalion Chief Todd Malphrus.

It took about an hour to extract him from the equipment. He then was flown to a Savannah hospital for treatment, he said. His condition is unknown.

"The tree was really heavy and had him pinned," Malphrus said, "so (fellow workers) had to cut the top limbs. The excavator was completely crushed."
