United Way of the Lowcountry Inc. has received $1,209,365 in gifts and pledges, putting it at 46.5 percent of its $2.6 million annual fundraising goal, according to a news release Thursday.
Hope Haven is one of the United Way partner agencies that benefit from the campaign. The agency provides help for children who are victims of sexual abuse and rape, as well as help for their families.
Shauw Chin Capps, executive director of Hope Haven, reports in the release that 398 child victims and 103 adult victims received help from her organization last year.
"Preventing this horrendous crime requires education," Capps said. "... Since 2006, we have trained 999 adults ..., enabling them to recognize, react responsibly to and prevent incidences of child sexual abuse."
