Long in the works, Beaufort's new parking system is taking shape. Workers on Wednesday began installing the 500-pound, solar-powered stations, designed to look a bit like their predecessors.

How it works: Motorists will note the number of the spot they are parked in, find a pay station and follow the directions. The stations will accept coin, bills and plastic. People can even top off their spot via phone.
