Northern Beaufort County residents have one fewer option for fresh food, at least for now.
After 11 years in its location off Sea Island Parkway on Lady’s Island, Islands Meat Market has closed its doors.
Owner Julian Johnson’s butcher shop had offered fresh meat, vegetables in bulk, deli meats and cheese, prepared meals and also served soups and sandwiches. In a note on the door dated Feb. 7, Johnson said health issues have kept him from performing day-to-day operations.
“It has been our pleasure to be Lady’s Island Meat Market we wish you well in the future,” wrote Johnson, who also sold bread at local farmers markets.
The note didn’t include plans for the future of the store. Attempts to reach Johnson on Monday were unsuccessful.
Signs in the windows of his shop still advertise ribeye steaks, pork chops, chicken breasts and bacon. Rolling shelves inside are stocked with sauces.
