Plans for the 35,000-square-foot store received a preliminary approval from Beaufort’s design review board last week, Kelly said. She said the German supermarket chain was asked to change some minor architectural features of the store.
Kelly said the company is expected to come back before the board again on Aug. 10. The store is planned for the corner of Parris Island Gateway and Robert Smalls Parkway.
Lidl opened its first stores in the United States in June. The company also is continuing discussions for a location on Hilton Head Island at the Sea Turtle Marketplace, formally Pineland Station.
South Carolina was the site for two of the first 10 stores opened by the company. The locations are Spartanburg and Greenville.
Overall the company plans to open 100 stores across the East Coast by summer 2018, a news release by the company states.
The company has also submitted plans for stores in Bluffton in June 2016.
