A minivan caught fire in an empty downtown Beaufort parking lot after the driver smelled a burning odor and pulled over Friday morning.

The 2001 Dodge minivan was on Harrington Street at about 11:45 a.m. when the driver noticed the smell and pulled into the parking lot of the former American Legion post. The van was consumed by the flames, but nearby buildings weren’t damaged and the fire was out within minutes, Beaufort-Port Royal Fire Chief Reece Bertholf said.

The road was blocked for about an hour.
