Beaufort VFW holding fundraiser to allow Marines to attend Marine Corps Ball

To raise money to help young, local Marines attend the annual Marine Corps Ball, a Beaufort VFW post will hold a motorcycle ride and cookout Saturday.

Registration for Ride for the Ball will begin at 10:30 a.m. at VFW Post 8760 at 37 Castle Rock Road. Tickets will cost $20 per rider and $10 per passenger, with all proceeds going toward tickets to the ball for local Marines and their dates, Dwight Hora said. The first 40 people to register for the ride will receive a free beer stein. All vehicles are welcome, according to the release.

Marine Corps balls are typically held around the Marine Corps' birthday on Nov. 10, Hora said. Locally, several of the units at Beaufort's military installations hold individual ones, he said.

Hora said the idea for the fundraiser came from a Marine stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort who wanted to raise money for his fellow Marines. Hora said the ticket prices for the balls had increased from $10 a person to $85 for the ones held at more upscale locations. With ticket prices and other associated costs rising, the Marines were holding car washes and yard sales to raise extra money.

Because attendance is mandatory for some units, Hora said, the VFW was happy to help the Marines raise money.

The ride will start at the VFW, proceeding to Carolina Honky Tonk and Sunset Pizzeria in Okatie. The ride will stop at Schooner's Neighborhood Bar and Grill in Ridgeland and Harold's Country Club in Yemassee before returning to the VFW at about 4 p.m.

A cookout and live music by Boomerang at the VFW will follow the ride.
