A 19-year-old Beaufort man was arrested Monday on suspicion of using Craigslist to advertise himself as a prostitute.
An undercover Beaufort police officer answered the ad and arranged to meet the man at a Beaufort motel, according to Police Chief Matt Clancy.
"He told the officer he would perform sexual acts in exchange for money," Clancy said. "(He) is a longtime resident of the area and is believed to be operating on his own in this case. Financial gain appears to be his only motive."
The man was arrested at about noon at the motel and charged with prostitution. If convicted, a first-offense prostitution charge is a misdemeanor that carries a fine of up to $200 or as many as 30 days in jail, according to state law.
