Beaufort City Councilwoman Donnie Beer has been named the volunteer of the year for the Low Country Chapter of the Red Cross.
A volunteer for the past 15 years, Beer is a Beaufort Disaster Action Team coordinator and frequently responds to fires at all hours of the day, sometimes even riding up in her golf cart, said Jeanne Carmichael, service to the armed forces regional specialist for the chapter.
In December, she went to New York City for a week to help victims of Superstorm Sandy. There, she worked as a government operations liaison supervisor, connecting storm victims to government assistance.
Locally, she helps with the service to the armed forces program and is training to participate in the international services program.

"She just can exude this aura of attention," Carmichael said. "She is one who hones in on what the issue is, what the situation is, and what she can do."
Beer also assists with training for new volunteers and is organizing orientation opportunities. She is modest about her work with the Red Cross, saying she simply helps as needs arise.
"If I could, I would, because that's part of being with the Red Cross," Beer said.
