Thrift awards $375,000 to Beaufort County nonprofits

More than 30 Beaufort County nonprofit organizations recently received grants from a charity thrift shop on Hilton Head Island.

The Bargain Box awarded $375,000 to 35 groups, based on the organizations' needs and their impact on the community, according to a news release.

Grants were given to the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Bluffton-Jasper County Volunteers in Medicine, Bluffton Self Help, Born to Read, Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island, Child Abuse Prevention Association, The Children's Center, Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse, Coastal Discovery Museum and The Deep Well Project.

Also receiving awards were Family Promise of Beaufort County, the Fastlane Track Club, First Presbyterian Day School, the Heritage Library Foundation, Heroes on Horseback, the Hilton Head Choral Society, Hilton Head Island Safe Harbour, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, Hope Haven of the Lowcountry, Backpack Buddies of Hilton Head, the Hilton Head Island Recreation Association, Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry, Lowcountry Legal Volunteers, Meals on Wheels, Med-i-assist Inc., Memory Matters, National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Penn Center, Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire, Sandalwood Community Food Pantry, Second Helpings, Special Olympics Area 8, The Sandbox, Hilton Head Volunteers in Medicine Clinic and the You Are Not Alone Club of Hilton Head.

Since 1965, The Bargain Box has given more than $12.9 million to Beaufort County organizations in cash grants and in-kind donations, according to the release.
