Mitchelville celebrates 150th anniversary on Hilton Head

The founding of the country's first self-governed village for freed slaves, Mitchelville, will celebrate its 150th anniversary Saturday. "Fa Be Free: The Dawn of Freedom" will feature a performance by Natalie Daise called "Becoming Harriet Tubman," and Lavon Stevens and the Hilton Head High School chorus will perform gospel music. Monty Jett of the Adventure Radio show "The Island" will be master of ceremonies. Performances will take place at 6 p.m. at Hilton Head Island High School's Visual and Performing Arts Center.
