Former Beaufort County clerk likely to see early release from probation

Former Beaufort County Clerk of Court Elizabeth Smith has asked for, and is likely to receive, an early end to her two-year probation sentence for misusing federal child-support enforcement funds, according to court records. Smith's attorney, Lionel Lofton of Charleston, filed a motion Sept. 7 saying Smith had complied with all of the terms of her probation, which included six months house arrest, and that her federal probation officer has no objections to an early termination of her supervised release. A federal judge has yet to rule on the request, court records show. Smith remains on state probation.
