A Lady's Island Middle School student has won top honors in a statewide competition, the S.C. Education Oversight Committee announced Tuesday. Two students from Beaufort Middle School were runners-up. The statewide contest was part of the committee's goal to equip all graduates to compete in the global economy by 2020, according to a Beaufort County School District news release. Students were asked to write an essay, create a poster or take a photograph that answers the question, "What does education mean to me and my future?" Mattie Jo Thomas, a Lady's Island eighth-grader, was the state middle-school winner and received an iPad courtesy of private donations. Education Oversight Committee representatives, including state Rep. Andy Patrick, R-Hilton Head Island, and Education Oversight Committee interim executive director Melanie Barton, presented the award Tuesday.
