Identities of deadly Hilton Head crash victims not released

The names of two people who died in a single-car accident Friday afternoon on Hilton Head Island weren't released Saturday because family members of at least one victim still haven't been located, authorities said.

"We are making an attempt to get hold of next of kin, and we are getting some leads, but we haven't been able to make contact yet," said Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.

Relatives of one victim were traveling in Nevada, making it hard to track them down, he said.

The accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Skull Creek and Seabrook drives inside the gated community of Hilton Head Plantation.

S.C. Highway Patrol said the driver, a 31-year-old Hilton Head man, disregarded a stop sign on Skull Creek Drive, The pickup he was driving then hit a tree. Both the driver and his passenger, a 47-year-old Melrose, Minn., woman, were trapped in the car and declared dead at the scene.

Additional details about the crash were unavailable Saturday.
