Volunteers, supporters made Healing Heroes Golf Week a success

The Healing Heroes Golf Week hosted by the Independence Fund, an all-volunteer, nonprofit foundation dedicated to supporting severely wounded veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, was a great success. We exceeded our goals and will be providing a Paramobile to a veteran in Beaufort. It enables wheelchair users to stand up and play golf.

Thanks to the four Lowcountry golf venues: Callawassie Island Club, Lady's Island Country Club, Sanctuary Golf Club and Fripp Island Resort for co-sponsoring this great event by opening their wonderful golf venues for our veterans and Lowcountry golfers.

Thanks to the more than 225 golfers who had the opportunity to play with 21 severely wounded veterans and had some great experiences in the process.

Thanks to the more than 170 wonderful, patriotic citizens who attended the Heroes Banquet and silent auction and bid on more than 120 gifts provided by local golf courses, tennis facilities, merchants, and artists (thanks to all these folks, too). Thanks to Hampton Hall for providing its beautiful facilities for this banquet.

And a special thanks to the hundreds of great, caring volunteers who worked tirelessly to provide meals, hospitality, lodging (thanks to Palm Key Resort), transportation, gifts, archery and fly-fishing instructions, counseling and other great experiences for our veterans.

Thanks to Huspa Equestrian Park for hosting the vets for horseback riding and other instruction -- you're great.

This event could not have happened without these volunteers and their Southern hospitality and love of our veterans who have given so much for our freedoms.
