First Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head Island will hold a Civil War and Gullah history series at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 26, Nov. 2, 9 and 16 in observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
The series focuses on events during the war that took place in the area and coincides with the sesquicentennial of the Battle of Port Royal in Port Royal Sound and what is now Port Royal Plantation.
Topics will include: Wednesday, Island Packet columnist David Lauderdale will give an overview of Hilton Head Island's role in the Civil War; Nov. 2, The Battle of Port Royal, a major Union victory; Nov. 9: Mitchelville, the first planned village for freedmen in the South; Nov. 16: Dr. Emory Campbell, former Penn Center director, will discuss the impact of slavery on Lowcountry African-Americans.
The church is at 540 William Hilton Parkway between mile markers 5 and 6.
