Bluffton Township Fire District crews battled a blaze for more than four hours at a home on Gascoigne Bluff Road off May River Road early Sunday, according to district spokesman Capt. Randy Hunter.
The home's occupants awoke to the smell of smoke at about 3 a.m. and called 911. Crews arrived at the house on the banks of the May River and found smoke coming from the home's eaves, Hunter said.
No injuries were reported and no other residences nearby were threatened by the fire, he said.
It took four engine crews more than four hours to completely extinguish the blaze, which fire officials believe started near a fireplace. There was extensive damage, but the home was not a total loss, Hunter said.
