People who might have information about how a 21-year-old man got shot Thursday afternoon on Hilton Head Island -- including the victim -- aren't cooperating with investigators, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
At about 4 p.m. Thursday, deputies were called to Hilton Head Hospital after a man arrived at the emergency room seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to the arm, a Sheriff's Office news release Friday said.
The victim told deputies he was walking to a relative's house on Marshland Road when a green sedan occupied by two black men stopped in the road in front of him. The passenger reportedly pulled out a handgun and fired several shots, one of which struck the victim. The assailants then drove toward Mathews Drive, the release said.
The victim said that shortly after the shooting, a friend happened to drive by, saw his injury and dropped him off at the hospital.
The victim was transported to a Savannah hospital for further treatment, according to the news release. His condition was not released. He was still in the hospital as of Friday afternoon, according to Sheriff's Office Sgt. Robin McIntosh.
Investigators later discovered evidence that indicated the shooting might have occurred at a home on Matilda Drive, not on the road, the news release said. Two people at the residence refused to provide any information.
McIntosh said in an e-mail the victim has also declined to cooperate with investigators.
The Sheriff's Office so far has no information regarding possible motives or suspects, she said.
