Another candidate steps forward for Town Council

Peter Zych announced Monday he will seek the Ward 3 seat on Hilton Head Island Town Council held by Drew Laughlin.

Here is information about him.

Age: 70

Wife: Mary (49 years)

Education: BA, Rutgers University

Occupation: Retired after a career in money management

Political experience: Lost to mayor-elect Drew Laughlin by 41 votes in Laughlin's last contested election for councilman

  • Supports attracting more tourism and environmentally friendly businesses to the island
  • Favors reappraising the town's land management ordinance to make it easier for property owners to make improvements
  • Opposes "massive rezoning, subsidized high-density housing or taxpayer handouts to island businesses" to attract development
  • Says Town Council can benefit from his experience of "growing and protecting rather large sums of money"
  • Wants to protect the "clean ocean, sounds and estuaries absolutely essential" to maintaining a quality lifestyle on Hilton Head
  • "It is the environment that protects the value of all our residences and the worth of our island businesses," Zych said in a prepared statement. " ... I shy away from the idea that this island is essentially a real estate, restaurant- and tourist-oriented business opportunity with a little room left over for the residents' desire for a lovely place to call home."
