Two-car crash closes U.S. 278 for nearly three hours

A two-vehicle crash during rush hour Thursday that caused a SUV to roll and slide into a utility pole along U.S. 278 at the south entrance to Rose Hill closed the road for nearly three hours, according to the Bluffton Township Fire District.

Power lines fell across all four lanes of U.S. 278, said Randy Hunter, a district spokesman. The crash, which happened between 5:30 and 6 p.m., also knocked out the intersection's traffic light. S.C. Department of Transportation workers were on the scene for several hours making repairs.

One person suffered minor injuries and was taken to Hilton Head Hospital for observation, Hunter said.

Traffic in both directions of U.S. 278 was diverted until the road opened at about 8 p.m.
