14 pounds of pot on its way to Bluffton intercepted

Fourteen pounds of marijuana headed by mail from Arizona to Bluffton were confiscated by law enforcement officers this week.

The Beaufort/Jasper Multi Agency Drug Task Force, with the assistance of the Chandler Police Department in Arizona, seized the marijuana Wednesday on Hilton Head Island, task force Lt. Joey Woodward said Friday.

The package was headed to an address on Simmonsville Road in Bluffton, according a news release Friday from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. Woodward said he could not reveal further details about where authorities confiscated the drugs or how they found the package.

The task force and the Chandler Police Department have been investigating people involved in trafficking marijuana from Arizona to Beaufort County. The task force obtained a warrant to search the package, the release said.

The investigation continues, and it is unclear how many people are involved in the drug ring, Woodward said. The origin of the marijuana has not been determined, he said, but it is suspected to be coming from California or Mexico.

Woodward said the task force deals with two or three mailed packages of drugs per year. Those involved in trafficking by mail tend to use false names or addresses and package the narcotics so to mask the contents and scent, he said.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Beaufort/Jasper Multi Agency Drug Task Force hotline at 843-757-1575, extension 300.
