Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office were testing Segways to see how well they would work at crowded Hilton Head Island events, like the St. Patrick's Day Parade, where mobility can be an issue, and as a beach patrol vehicle. The Segway can reach a top speed of 12 mph and can go 24 miles on a charge, said Lt. Glen Zanelotti.
