Dozens of surfers turned out at Burkes Beach near high tide to try their hands at riding the big waves generated by the storm.

As Hurricane Earl barreled toward the Outer Banks of North Carolina, it caused nothing but high waves in South Carolina. Skies were clear all day and there was barely a breeze as the storm stayed hundreds of miles off the Beaufort County coast.
