A middle-aged man barricaded himself inside his Hilton Head Plantation home on Wednesday night, prompting an hours-long standoff with law enforcement.
Members of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office SWAT team spent more than two hours attempting to negotiate with the man in his High Bluff Road home. As of 10 p.m., they had not made contact with him, according to Lt. Renita Berry of the Sheriff's Office.
It was unclear whether the man was armed or if anyone else was inside the residence, Berry said. A later Sheriff's Office release said the man made threats suggesting he was armed.
Police were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m., Berry said, when what she described as a "disgruntled" man -- who has not been identified -- called a county dispatcher.

Berry said she did not know what the man said to the dispatcher.
When deputies arrived, the man barricaded himself in his home, Berry said.
"Within 30 minutes of the phone call, we had people on site trying to initiate contact," she said.
Area residents were asked to remain in their homes through a reverse 911 call system, the news release said.
No further details were available from law enforcement as of 10:15 p.m.
