A man driving a 1997 Geo Tracker died Thursday morning after a head-on crash on May River Road near Linden Plantation Road, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres.
The Beaufort County Coroner's Office would not release the driver's identity because his family had not been notified.
Pedro Lopez, 31, who was driving a 1999 Dodge Neon, and his passenger Luis Noel Rocha Lopez, 36, both of Bluffton, are in the intensive care unit of Savannah's Memorial University Medical Center, according to hospital staff. Their conditions have not been released.
A 2001 Mitsubishi driven by Bluffton resident Wendy Pixley also was involved in the crash, but Pixley reported no injuries, Beres said.The Geo was traveling west on May River Road at about 8:30 a.m. when it crossed the center line and struck the Neon, Beres said. The Neon was then hit by the Mitsubishi.
Both lanes of May River Road were closed between Buckwalter Parkway and Buck Island Road for about two hours after the wreck.The crash is under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.
