Car strikes, kills St. Helena man

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a crash Friday night that killed a 48-year-old St. Helena Island man.

Larry Biser, 48, was walking in the middle of Sea Island Parkway near Warsaw Island Road at about 10:30 p.m. when he was struck by a car and killed, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

While the investigation into the crash is ongoing, charges are not expected to be filed against the 87-year-old driver of the 2000 Mercury sedan that struck Biser, said Lance Cpl. Bob Beres, highway patrol spokesman.

Biser was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was sent Friday night to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for an autopsy, said Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott.

Ott said the Beaufort County Dispatch Center received at least two calls about a pedestrian walking in the road just before the crash.

"A (Beaufort County Sheriff's) deputy was actually on his way to the scene when somebody hit him," Ott said.

Biser died from injuries sustained in the crash, Ott said.
