After eluding authorities for about three weeks, a 45-year-old St. Helena Island man was arrested Monday and charged with assaulting a woman and her daughter and pointing a rifle at them July 3.
Calvin Chaplin was being held Monday in the Beaufort County Detention Center on one count of aggravated criminal domestic violence and one count of assault and battery. His bond was set at $11,092.50.
Investigators say Chaplin got into an argument with a 40-year-old woman inside a home on Pearl Harbor Lane and pushed her into a bedroom window, breaking the window.
Chaplin also choked the woman's 19-year-old daughter when she came to her mother's aid and pointed a rifle at them when they attempted to contact authorities, said Cpl. Robin McIntosh, spokeswoman for the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
