After traveling more than 50 miles to seek expert medical care, 17-year-old Rickeidre Wright of Fairfax became the mother of Beaufort County's first baby of the new year.
Wright gave birth to her first child, 7-pound, 14-ounce Ny'Rhionna Serenitee, at 1:36 a.m. Thursday at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
The child was delivered via an emergency C-section, according to the hospital. The child was due Dec. 29.
Wright said she checked into Beaufort Memorial after discovering that her local hospital did not have an obstetrician/gynecologist on staff.

Wright said she could either have had the baby in Beaufort or Aiken, but ultimately chose Beaufort Memorial, where her sister is employed.
The child was the first of three born at the hospital as of Thursday night, said Tiffany Heath, coordinator of Beaufort Memorial's birthing center.
No babies were born at Hilton Head Hospital as of Thursday night, the hospital said.
