Careful Beaufort burglar wears two masks

BEAUFORT -- A man wearing a white bed sheet over his head broke into a home on North Street at about 4 a.m. Wednesday and took several items before being chased away by the victim's son.

Apparently, the suspect had taken extra precautions to conceal his identity.

When his pursuer yanked the sheet off the suspect's head, he found him wearing a second mask. The mask was described by police as being similar to that worn by the villain in the movie "Scream."

"It's pretty ... strange," said Maj. Matt Clancy, Beaufort Police Department spokesman. "Investigators are out there right now, re-walking the scene in the daylight. We're hoping we can come up with a little bit more."

The victim, whose purse was among the items stolen, said she was startled by a noise in her house. She said when she went to check it out, she saw the man wearing the white bed sheet over his head, according to police.

The woman's adult son was awakened by the commotion and chased off the burglar,.

The woman's son chased the suspect for a short distance and lost sight of him near Wilmington Street, according to police.

Officers set up a perimeter around the area. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office's dog unit attempted to track the suspect but was unsuccessful, Clancy said.

The intruder was described as thin and of medium height.
