Beaufort High student killed in car crash

LADY'S ISLAND -- A Beaufort High School student and member of the school's football team that reached the state title game died in a Thursday morning car wreck on Lady's Island. Lance Dobine Jr., 17, was killed at about 6:30 a.m. when his car struck a tree in the Telfair neighborhood on Brickyard Point Road on Lady's Island, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The crash shut down Brickyard Point Road for more than an hour.

Lance, a rising senior at Beaufort High, was taken by Beaufort County EMS to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he died. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the highway patrol said.

Lance was a running back on the 2007-08 Eagles football team that went 12-3 enroute to an appearance in the Class AAAA Division II state title game.

Beaufort High head coach Mark Clifford said Lance will be remembered by the Eagles coaching staff and players as a hard-working kid with a magnetic personality.

"He was a great athlete with a good heart," he said. "One of the biggest tragedies about all of this is that he had great potential. Like a lot of kids his age, he hadn't yet reached that potential. He practiced hard, always went full speed, and had tremendous athletic ability."

The team was participating in a morning workout when news of Lance's death reached the coaching staff.

Clifford said he spent much of Thursday notifying Lance's friends, including seniors from last year's team.

"He had so many friends -- that's what's so sad about all of this," he said. "Everybody knew him, and his friends always stood by his side. He had a big-time following. We're just going to try to be there in anyway we can for his family."
