BEAUFORT -- All air traffic out of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort has been grounded this week while construction crews work around the clock to pave the 500-foot intersection of the air station's primary and secondary runways.
The closure is part of a $5.5 million, routine maintenance project to resurface the 12,000-foot main runway. The project also includes installing new runway lights and using a pressure water cannon to remove skid marks from the runway.
The airfield closed Saturday and isn't expected to re-open until Tuesday, barring inclement weather that could slow construction, said David Moore, airfield operations manager.
