Palmetto Electric customers should double check any emails they receive that appear to be from the energy provider, the company warned Wednesday.

In an email to its customers, Palmetto Electric warned that several households have received “suspicious emails” appearing to be sent from the electric cooperative.

The emails, labeled as a “security authentication update,” ask recipients to scan a QR code contained within to comply with a new security feature and the “latest organization policy.”

These messages are illegitimate, Palmetto Electric warned, and members should not scan the code or follow any links in similar suspicious emails.

One way to verify the legitimacy of emails from the company, and many others, is to double check the email address of origin. In a gmail inbox, messages appear with the name of the sender on the left hand side. If a user clicks on the message, they can see the exact email address of origin.

The scam emails have appeared with the name “Palmetto Electric Cooperative Portal,” but the email address attached to the message is not an official Palmetto Electric address.

Palmetto Electric has encouraged customers who receive such emails to delete them and not interact with any enclosed links or QR codes. It’s recommended that customers report suspicious emails as scams from your inbox to Palmetto Electric.
